Tokyo

The garden is reminiscent of Kyoto and predates the buildings in the compound. The landscaping is attributed to Kobori Enshu, a renowned master. There is the ubiquitous heart-shaped pond, stocked with turtles and carp and a teahouse removed here from Nagoya in the 1780s. The bell, crafted in 1387, is one of Tokyo's oldest. Do not overlook the shrine to the tanuki (Japanese raccoons) who supposedly lost their homes to make way for the garden. Permission to enter the garden should be obtained from Asakusa Kannon's head abbot in advance. Admission: Free
