Founded in 1893, the Meiji-za, which moved into its present premises seven years ago, enjoys the reputation as one of the bastions of Japanese traditional popular drama, specializing in Samurai period drama. It seats 1,400 and is immensely popular with middle-aged women who come from all over the Kanto region to see their favorite TV actors perform live the roles they play on television. Patrons can enjoy a makunouchi bento, a typical Japanese lunch box, or western snacks for one of the two coffee shops on the premises. Admission: JPY5000-JPY12000.
