One of the three big festivals in Tokyo, the Sanno features an elegant procession of ox-drawn carriages, mikoshi (portable shrines), and about 500 people splendidly attired in Imperial Court costumes. The parade starts from the edge of the Imperial Palace, circles it and continues for three kilometers down to the Ginza and Kyobashi, with Shinto priests offering prayers for peace along the way. This much-awaited cultural event is held in even-numbered years, alternating with the Kanda Festival. In years when there is no parade, a stage is set for traditional songs and dances at the Hie Shrine. Street stalls sell souvenirs and traditional festival snacks and drinks. Admission is free.
