The mother of all hanabi (fireworks) festivals, this major event on Tokyo's cultural calendar draws crowds of more than a million, with up to 20,000 fireworks lighting up the summer night sky over the city. Held annually on the last Sunday in July, the Sumida River Fireworks Festival is a revival of an Edo spectacle first held in 1733 to officially open the river to boats for the summer. The fireworks displays officially start at 7p, but be sure to secure your spot by noon to be able to enjoy a good view of the spectacular pyrotechnics.
