Tsuruya Ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn with polished wood floors, rice paper sliding screens, tatami-mat guestrooms and a lovely small garden. The inn offers both indoor and open-air public baths. The latter is a large, artistically landscaped pool edged with rocks and bushes. The hot-spring waters in the Yumura Onsen are simple thermal, rich in sodium chloride, good for treating anemia and neuralgia as well as stomach disorders. At 98 degrees Centigrade, the natural waters can be used to boil eggs, vegetables and even whole chickens, but the public baths are cooled to a bearable temperature.
